A 58-year-old man, Darin Farrow, has been arrested in connection to alleged burglary at a Habitat for Humanity home under construction in St. Petersburg. The St. Petersburg Police Department reported that Farrow is accused of stealing approximately $3,780 worth of power tools and cabinets from the site situated at 1217 18th Avenue South. The timing of the incident is noted to have been around 3 a.m. on July 3, as MySuncoast reports.
According to details from FOX 13 News, the arrest took place after a detective, while canvassing the area for evidence, saw Farrow riding his bicycle in the vicinity of the crime scene. He was apprehended last Thursday, July 17. Farrow now faces charges which include burglary of an unoccupied dwelling and possession of drug paraphernalia, and is being held on a $25,500 bond.
The break in the case seemed to come from a dose of bad timing on the part of the suspect. As a detective was on a ground, gathering evidence and conducting neighborhood inquiries, "remarkably, the suspect rode by the crime scene on his bicycle," which led to his identification and subsequent arrest, as detailed in an article by Tampa Free Press. This unconventional turn of events underscored the inadvertent role Farrow played in his own capture.
Habitat for Humanity is known for its work in providing affordable housing to those in need, and the construction site represented more than just the physical building materials that were taken.
