A man employed at the Stellantis assembly plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan is in custody after a frightful standoff where he barricaded himself inside the facility, prompting an urgent evacuation of the site. The incident, which transpired on the weekend, saw Stellantis workers hustled out for their own safety, leaving a minimal number of employees, or "skeleton crew," on site since the plant was not in full operation that day, as reported by CBS News Detroit.
After receiving a 911 call alerting them to a potential gunman on the premises, possibly experiencing hallucinations, a quick response was coordinated by local law enforcement. Over 30 officers responded to the emergency, including special teams dedicated to crisis negotiation, Captain Mario Bastianelli revealed in an interview with WWJ Newsradio. The standoff, which began around 4 p.m. last Saturday, ended peaceably, within three hours, when the suspect was taken into custody, the crisis negotiation team proving instrumental in this resolution.
The evacuated building, situated at Van Dyke Avenue near 16 Mile, became a restricted zone as officers established a perimeter on the second floor to negotiate with the armed individual. Details on what specifically sparked this dangerous situation are still unclear. But according to Acting Deputy Chief David Allen of the Sterling Heights Police Department, the man was armed and had refused to engage in conversation, as stated in a report from FOX 2 Detroit.
Fortunately, the incident concluded without any injuries. The identity of the man, a Stellantis employee, has not been disclosed. A weapon was seized on the scene by authorities, and the situation is still under active investigation. It is yet to be determined what charges the suspect may face, as police are still "putting together the pieces," Bastianelli confided to WWJ Newsradio.
