The Tampa Water Department is rolling out a new initiative to help homeowners streamline their water use, particularly when it comes to lawn irrigation. Tampa residents can now potentially to trim down both their water waste and utility bills by participating in a rebate program directed at upgrading their irrigation systems.
Research from the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences underscores that irrigation accounts for at least half of the domestic water consumption in Florida. The Tampa Water Department produces on average 82 million gallons of water daily, a prodigal amount with much being used on lawns. This program is set up to encourage efficiency and the conservation of critical water resources in a region where the need is pressing.
According to a statement from the Tampa government, the rebate program is fairly straightforward. Homeowners can contact licensed irrigation contractors from an approved list available at TampaBayWaterWise.org/Sprinklers. "We understand homeowners want a healthy, well-maintained lawn. That’s why the Water Department provides expert advice, tools, and guidance, so that homeowners are making the most of out every drop," Mayor Jane Castor relayed. Post evaluation and recommended upgrades by the contractor, completed work can be submitted by the residents online to claim their rebate.
There's a range of upgrades covered under this program, including the installation or repair of rain sensors, implementation of high-efficiency rotary nozzles, and the capping irrigation heads. Homeowners who jump into the program can receive rebates starting at a minimum of $50. “This program encourages Tampa Bay homeowners to check and upgrade their sprinkler systems by offering rebates that make it easy to save water, reduce costs, and still enjoy a healthy, beautiful landscape,” said Amelia Brown, Demand Management Program Manager at Tampa Bay Water, further clarifying the intent behind the initiative, as per the City of Tampa's release.
The program, a collaboration with Tampa Bay Water Wise and co-funded by the Southwest Florida Water Management District, spans across multiple regions including Tampa as well as Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas counties, and the cities of St. Pete and New Port Richey. Homeowners interested in partaking must submit all relevant forms and documents before the deadline of September 30, 2025, to qualify for the rebate, as per the TampaBayWaterWise.org/Sprinklers website.
