In the wake of the Texas Hill Country's dire floods, Attorney General Ken Paxton has declared an official crackdown on scam artists preying on charitable spirits. Paxton's office is digging into the depths of fraudulent schemes that have misled donors into handing over funds, supposedly for the flood-stricken communities, but instead lining the pockets of imposters.
Heartened by compassion but misled by deceit, would-be donors found themselves empty-handed after cyber swindlers hijacked the narrative of the Center Point Volunteer Fire Department (CPVFD) of Kerr County, which had suffered significant loss during the disaster. According to Texas Attorney General, a recent statement by Paxton, "It is sick and disgusting that people would use the tragedy of the devastating floods to enrich themselves by deceiving well-meaning people trying to help." He continued to call for prayers for the victims and urged the public to stay vigilant against such scams.
The CPVFD, a recognized 501(c)(3) entity, was dependent on community support to rebuild and carry on with its noble cause. Unbeknownst to many donors, their intended contributions were diverted through intricate payment platform forgeries orchestrated by fraudsters opportunistic in the face of calamity.
According to the Texas Attorney General, Texans are urged to remain cautious when choosing their methods of charitable support. A handful of pre-vetted resources have been proposed to ensure donations reach their rightful destination. These include CharityWatch and GuideStar, both reputable in providing data on IRS-recognized nonprofits. Guarding against unsolicited solicitations and "smishing" campaigns is also recommended, as is checking your number against the Texas and National Do Not Call Registries.
The Texas Attorney General's office stands at the ready to take action against the charlatans and has issued guidelines to help the public report suspected fraud. Any suspicious activity can be reported directly to the Texas Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division. Full details on the secure donation can be found on the Attorney General’s website, anchoring citizens in safe harbor amidst the digital storms of deceit.
