In response to the devastating floods that have swept through Central Texas, leaving a trail of destruction and loss in their wake, major sports franchises from the Lone Star State have stepped up to the plate. The Texas NBA teams—the Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, and San Antonio Spurs—are spearheading a joint relief effort to assist those affected by the natural disaster. These teams have introduced a special "Texas Strong" t-shirt, sales from which will benefit the Texas Sport for Healing Fund. As reported by KHOU, 100% of the proceeds from the merchandise will go towards aid efforts in the hard-hit areas.
This philanthropic initiative comes in the terrible aftermath of the floods that claimed the lives of over two dozen campers and counselors from Camp Mystic and left a death toll of at least 120, with many victims hailing from the Houston area. Acknowledging an unspeakable tragedy, the "Texas Strong" shirts will be worn by players during their warmups at the NBA Summer League, with the intent of both raising funds and awareness. According to the Rockets' website, the design pays homage to Camp Mystic's iconic logo and symbolizes the spirit of unity in confronting this crisis.
Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys and other Texas pro sports teams have extended their condolences and announced their own contributions. The NFL has joined hands with the Cowboys and Houston Texans in donating a combined $1.5 million to the recovery efforts. In a statement obtained by El Paso Times, the Cowboys expressed their deep sorrow for the flood's impact on the community, particularly for the young girls at Camp Mystic and their families.
The sentiment of solidarity was echoed by other Texas pro sports organizations, which have assured ongoing support. For instance, the Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars highlighted their readiness to assist in the recovery, as noted in their recent public statements. As the death toll and emotional toll continue to climb, the Dallas Wings addressed the affected families directly, empathizing with the loss of life and offering hope—an important message from a fellow women's sports organization, considering the tragedy's proximity to their community.
