Thousand Oaks witnessed a tragic incident on Tuesday evening when Ventura County deputies fatally shot a 23-year-old man during what was described as a mental health crisis. According to a news release issued by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a home on the 500 block of Racquet Club Lane around 8:00 PM after reports emerged about a subject, an adult male from Thousand Oaks, who was purportedly in possession of a firearm and exhibiting threatening behavior towards family members.

Initial contact was made with a family member who was situated outside of the residence, who apprised deputies of the situation unfolding within. It was during this dialogue that the individual in question appeared on the balcony and discharged a firearm. This prompted at least one deputy to return fire, resulting in the man's death. The identity of the decedent has not been publicly disclosed as of yet. Sergeant Monica Smith prepared the report and is also handling media queries regarding the ongoing investigation.

Emergency efforts were made to save the man's life, but he was ultimately declared dead at the scene. The Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit has since taken the reins of the investigation, aiming to shed further light on the circumstances of the event. At present, the investigation is active, and officials have indicated that more information will be made available later.

CBS News Los Angeles reported on the incident as well, mirroring many of the details shared by the Sheriff's office, but also noting that it was not clear who or what the man was aiming at when he fired his weapon.
