The University of California Board of Regents has announced the appointment of UC Davis graduate Miguel Craven as the student regent for the 2026-2027 academic year, a decision made during the Regents' three-day July meeting at UCLA, as reported by The Daily Bruin. Craven, who completed his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at UC Merced and is now progressing toward a Master's degree in Energy Systems at UC Davis, brings a fresh perspective to the board as the first student regent with an engineering background.
His tenure at UC Merced saw him serve as the student body president and as a student observer to the board's committee on finance and capital strategies, in these roles he not only fostered increased funding for student organizations and furthered professional development opportunities but also advocated for systemic enhancements in housing and financial access according to a news release obtained by FOX40. Commencing July 1, 2026, Craven will wield voting privileges on the board and during his term as student regent-designate, he can attend meetings however without the ability to vote until his official term begins.
"As a proud UC Merced alum, I have experienced firsthand the transformative impact a UC education has on our students," Craven told FOX40, expressing enthusiasm about furthering his collaboration with the Board of Regents to enhance educational and co-curricular opportunities. The University also celebrates this year the 50th anniversary of the student regent program, emphasizing the important role student regents play, as they have continuously championed matters like affordability and student support since the program's inception in 1975.
In leadership transitions, Sonya Brooks has already begun her term as the 2025-2026 student regent, and Charles Melton along with Karl Tokita were named as the 2026-2027 UC alumni regents, all embarking on year-long voting positions on the board, starting July 1, 2026. "I’m really excited for the upcoming years to set that pathway and show what a diverse UC looks like," Craven conveyed his vision during the meeting as quoted by The Daily Bruin, highlighting the importance of showcasing the University of California's diversity through leadership.
