In a significant policy shift, the current administration has taken steps to reroute benefits traditionally accessible to some residents, back exclusively to American citizens. Central to this change is the revocation of access to a slew of public programs for those deemed illegal aliens, impacting sectors such as health, education, and food assistance, across multiple federal departments, according to the White House statement.
As the White House puts it, this enforcement comes in the wake of the conclusion that taxpayer-funded benefits are for American citizens, not illegals. The Departments of Health and Human Services, Education, Agriculture, Labor, and Justice have each delineated measures to withdraw support for illegal aliens across various federally sponsored initiatives. A notable example includes denying access to Head Start, a program designed to foster the early education of young children from low-income families.
This decision, anchored by the administration's commitment to halt "the subsidization of open borders," aims to conserve an estimated $40 billion in taxpayers' money. Accordingly, free tuition for illegals at post-secondary career and technical education programs offered by the Department of Education will cease. The Department of Health and Human Services has also tightened restrictions, impacting such areas as health workforce scholarships and loans, mental health and substance abuse services, not to mention family planning.
Furthermore, the Department of Agriculture's new regulations mark the end of federally funded food assistance programs to individuals without legal status. Equally, the Department of Labor is withdrawing the provision of workforce development resources and grants, targeting a segment of the population that previously benefited from such initiatives. In addition, the Department of Justice is "closing longstanding loopholes that have allowed illegal aliens to access taxpayer-funded benefits," setting into motion a clampdown on fiscal outflows long-debated within political circles, as detailed by the same release.
