Ahead of the 2026 sturgeon spearing season, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding those interested in spearing on the Upriver Lakes to submit their applications by Friday. A total of 500 applicants will be selected to receive permits for spearing sturgeon on Lakes Poygan, Winneconne, and Butte des Morts.
Due to limited availability, tags are issued through a lottery system that assigns priority based on preference points. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources states that individuals seeking to spear on the Upriver Lakes must apply for a tag. For group applications, the drawing is determined by the member with the lowest number of preference points.
Spearers who choose not to apply for a tag this season have the option to purchase a preference point, which can improve their chances in future drawings. Applications for tags and preference point purchases can be made through the Go Wild system or at any authorized license vendor.
Successful applicants will be notified by October 1, allowing time to prepare in advance of the season. Applicants who are not selected for an Upriver Lakes tag will receive a preference point for use in future drawings. They also remain eligible to purchase a Lake Winnebago license. The 2026 sturgeon spearing season is scheduled to begin on February 14, spanning both Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes. The season may run for up to 16 days or until established harvest caps for each system are reached.
Sturgeon spearing is a long-standing regulated activity in Wisconsin, attracting participants from various areas. The season operates under biologically based harvest caps designed to support species sustainability and ensure long-term management. Individuals interested in participating are advised to complete their applications before the deadline.
