The outdoors in Wisconsin just got a huge nod of approval; the state's very own park system nabbed Destination of the Year at the inaugural Wisconsin Governor’s Outdoor Industry Awards. According to a press release from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), this celebration of the great outdoors comes as the Wisconsin State Park System marks its 125th founding anniversary in 2025.
In a ceremony dotted with excitement amidst nature enthusiasts and policymakers alike, a total of seven select individuals and organizations grasped this honor designed to acknowledge significant industry efforts that burgeon economic impact and bolster Wisconsin's outdoor scene on June 26, officials say. Fresh off its 125th anniversary, the park system, a beacon for those seeking the wilderness and wondrous landscapes, is reportedly deepening its engagement with activities that welcome newcomers to explore the pristine outdoors.
"Our state parks, forests, trails and recreation areas are really something to be proud of here in Wisconsin," DNR Secretary Karen Hyun was quoted in the Wisconsin DNR press release. Hyun stressed the role of these natural spaces in enriching the Wisconsin lifestyle, further noting the dedication of staff to conservation and the provision of exceptional recreational opportunities.
Other honorees lauded at the event include Adventure Outfitters, LLC which took home the Outdoor Business of the Year and volunteer Bill Menke who was recognized as Trailblazer of the Year; the event catered to a range of categories from business to individual contributions and collaborative efforts enhancing the state's outdoor opportunities and engagements. Those interested in the full landscape of winners and Wisconsin's vibrant State Park System, which dates back to a time when horse-drawn carriages might have been the norm can find more information on the DNR's state parks webpage, with expanded programming for the anniversary year that aims to attract even more fans to its scenic wonders.
The celebration signifies more than a nod of excellence; it embodies the passion and dedication of individuals and organizations to maintaining Wisconsin's position as a haven for outdoor activities. As Kennedy Domerchie, the Rising Star Award recipient and Outdoors Development Manager at Visit Eau Claire, possibly reflects on their achievement.
