An 11-year-old boy tragically died early this morning in a house fire in Parsonsburg, Wicomico County, with the blaze reported at approximately 4:20 a.m. at a residence on the 31600 block of Zion Road, as confirmed by the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Upon arrival, firefighters from the Parsonsburg Volunteer Fire Department and nearby agencies were confronted with the formidable task of battling a home fully consumed by flames. The three adults who had escaped informed the responders that there was a child still inside the home. However, despite the frantic rescue efforts, the boy was pronounced deceased at the site.
In a press release quoted by Fox Baltimore, Acting State Fire Marshal Jason Mowbray expressed the profound impact of the loss, stating, "The loss of a child in such a tragic manner is devastating beyond words. Our investigators are working diligently to determine what happened, and our focus is on supporting this family and the Parsonsburg community as they grieve." The house was reportedly equipped with functioning smoke alarms.
The investigation into the origin of the fire, which is believed to have started at the rear of the house, is being carried out jointly by the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division, a standard procedure following fatal fire incidents. The estimated damage to the property stands at $200,000, with an additional $100,000 loss attributed to the contents.
Further assistance is being extended to the bereaved family by the American Red Cross as they navigate through this crisis, as highlighted by WMAR2 News. Further details will become available as the joint investigation progresses.
