A tragic shooting at a Pico Rivera gas station on Saturday night left a 13-year-old boy dead. The teen had been waiting for a relative to get off work when the gunman opened fire. KTLA reports that the suspect remains at large. The fatal event took place around 11:45 p.m. in the 8800 block of Whittier Boulevard.
The NBC Los Angeles coverage notes that upon the deputies' arrival, they found the boy with gunshot wounds, he was pronounced dead at the scene, and a gold Toyota Camry present at the scene is also considered evidence in the ongoing investigation.
Investigators have been processing the location through the night. This information was shared by a KTLA journalist from a 76 station situated at the intersection of Whittier Boulevard and Rosemead Boulevard, where the boy was fatally shot.
While the circumstances leading up to the shooting are still unclear, what is particularly distressing is the absence of any apparent motive. Lt. Michael Modica revealed in a statement obtained by KTLA, "We’re early on in the investigative process right now. All I can say is that he fled the location he was last seen running away from on foot — there did not appear to be a robbery or an argument or anything prior." Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and contact the LASD Homicide Bureau or Crime Stoppers.
