Another significant drug haul was made last Saturday when U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Laredo Port of Entry intercepted a hefty quantity of methamphetamine with a street value exceeding $433,000. Vigilance at the border continues to be a priority as agents aim to stymie the flow of illegal substances that put communities at risk, reports the CBP.
The smuggling attempt was thwarted at the Colombia-Solidarity Bridge during a routine stop that escalated to a secondary inspection, which isn't an uncommon practice as officers routinely single out vehicles for thorough examinations that turned out to be critical this time, seeing as a 2011 Ford van driven by a U.S. citizen contained three packages of meth weighing a combined 47.09 pounds hidden amidst the driver's items. "I commend our CBP officers for their exceptional vigilance and commitment to safeguarding our nation," Port Director Alberto Flores praised his team in a statement released by the CBP.
Officers located the illicit narcotics through a combination of a trained canine alert and a nonintrusive inspection system capable of detecting hidden compartments. The meth and the vehicle were seized, and the driver was taken into custody. Homeland Security Investigations special agents are now working to uncover the broader network behind the smuggling attempt. Their efforts go beyond making arrests—they investigate, question, and dig deeper to dismantle entire operations.
