After more than a century of nurturing Ann Arbor's green thumbs, Downtown Home & Garden has announced its impending closure. In a post shared by the store, owner Kelly Vore details the financial pressures leading to the difficult decision, marking December 24 as the business's final day. Rising post-pandemic expenditures, alongside unforgiving rental hikes, have placed insurmountable strain on the beloved community fixture. "It was a turbulent ride through COVID and its economic ups and downs. We are currently at pre-pandemic volume with post-pandemic expenses. That makes a tight formula even tighter,” Vore expressed in the farewell announcement.

As reported by ClickOnDetroit, Downtown Home & Garden, situated at 210 South Ashley, has felt the icy touch of a chilly economic spring this year, combined with consumers pulling back on spending. A significant lease renewal for 2025-2029 brought conditions that were to prove ultimately unsustainable—a 26% increase in rent in the first year alone. Vore aimed to adapt and downsize to manage the heightened financial demands, but found the leap to align with soaring rental rates within the city to be a bridge too far.

Cognizant of the store's legacy and Vore's connection to the community, the owner spotlights the shared history between Downtown Home & Garden and its patrons. “It has been our sincere pleasure to be your trusted resource. To meet your out of town guests, to offer a place you can proudly show as a one-of-a-kind shop, who know your name (or we at least for sure know your dog’s name),” Vore shared in a Downtown Home & Garden's social media post.
