An important update for Arnold residents: County Executive Steuart Pittman has set into motion the Arnold Senior Activity Center’s renovation and expansion project. According to the Anne Arundel County website, the much-anticipated Capital Improvement Project at 44 Church Road began with an official groundbreaking event. This building, a relic from 1922 and once an elementary school, will undergo an enlargement of over 3,350 square feet to serve better the burgeoning number of members and their diverse range of activities.
Construction is pegged to start in the week of August 4, with a completion target for late summer 2026. Not mere expansion, but also sustainability, is key to the project, set to achieve LEED Silver Certification, boasting features like solar panels and electric charging stations. Starting on July 17, the Notice to Proceed gives nod to preserve architectural elements from the building's original guise, ensuring the extension mirrors its historic past.
While the project is underway, center activities will not halt but will relocate to a temporary home at the Anne Arundel Community College (AACC). With a temporary site at the AACC’s Arnold Campus, the Senior Nutrition Program and other regular proceedings will continue unabated.
For those interested, the department has released details about the construction contractor, BGC, Inc., as well as the construction management and architectural firms charged with overseeing this extensive build. The total cost rounds up to $8.8 million, covering a wide scope of tasks from parking reconfiguration to the addition of solar panels.
