Travelers coming through Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) can now breeze a little more easily through the International Arrivals. A significant overhaul has expanded the space by 20,600 square feet, optimizing the flow and reducing the wait times for those arriving from abroad. As reported by the City of Austin's official blog, the project focused on reconfiguring the existing area within the Barbara Jordan Terminal to enhance the overall passenger experience.
In the redesigned space, the baggage claim carousels for international arrivals have been strategically reshuffled. The Customs and Border Protection area, which used to have a carousel, now offers travelers more queue space, ultimately speeding up the time they spend waiting. In a move that welcomes oversized luggage with open arms, Baggage Carousel 8, stationed post-Customs, now caters exclusively to international travelers. "It's a whole new process," Kareem Huwaidi, Project Coordinator at AUS, told the City of Austin's official blog.
Adjustability is key in the new design, with Baggage Carousels 6 and 7 being convertible for use by either domestic or international flights. "All three [Baggage Claims 6-8] on a Saturday could be used as international," Rohini Kumarage, Airport Development Officer at AUS, mentioned in an interview. This flexibility is a response to the increasing volume of international flights and is part of AUS's ongoing efforts to cater to a broader audience.
The project, which began back in August 2024, also had a surprise social media moment when their mascot, Armie the Armadillo, was seen taking Baggage Carousel 6 for a spin, as the completion of the improvements not only enhances the technicalities of travel. Armie's exploits apparently went viral, suggesting travelers keep an eye on AUS X and Facebook pages for future features involving the mascot. "The passengers are our number one priority, not just for this project, but for all projects," said Kumarage, according to the City of Austin's blog.
In a grand vision for the future announced during the International Arrivals Improvements project ribbon cutting on June 18, AUS Chief Executive Officer Ghizlane Badawi stated that ultimately, the entire Baggage Claims 1-8 sector will serve international travelers, hinting at a more ambitious expansion plan under the Journey With AUS program. For now, international arrivals can relish the spacious new setting that awaits them, having been thoughtfully reimagined to streamline their entry into Austin.
