The Baker County Sheriff's Office has issued a public reminder via social media to remain vigilant of driving speeds within school zones. In a move to reinforce traffic safety, Baker County employs speed cameras specifically designed to monitor vehicular speeds in these sensitive areas. With the new school year commencing on August 11th, authorities are undertaking measures to ensure adherence to speed limits.
During the initial week of the school year, drivers caught by these cameras while exceeding speed limits by 11 mph or more, will be issued warnings. However, it's important to absolutely ensure that, starting from August 18, fines will be sent to those violating the traffic laws. The speed cameras are set to enforce the normal speed limit when school is in session, plus the reduced speed limit during flashing light periods. Additional signage has been installed to clearly mark the times when reduced speed is mandatory.
The effectiveness of the speed camera program is not to be underestimated. Since its initiation, Baker County has witnessed a dramatic fall in speeding violations—from an average of 1300 per day to just 150. As per the Baker County Sheriff's Office post, this reduction occurred during a warning period, a significant achievement considering not a single citation had to be issued.
For residents and commuters in Baker County, knowing the school zone schedules is important. The Sheriff's Office urges drivers to learn the times and locations where speed will be closely monitored. To help, a detailed list of school zones and their enforcement times has been provided. Traffic safety near schools is a shared responsibility, and Baker County is working to protect children through the use of speed cameras and public awareness efforts.
