In a clear message against the tide of violence plaguing our streets, Baltimore has witnessed the final chapter in the harrowing tale of a double murder dating back to 2023. The Office of the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City announced, on a sober note, that Tyrone Payne has been meted out two consecutive life sentences for his role in the deaths of Di'Shon Smith and Deshaun Waters, as per information obtained from their office.
Caught in the unforgiving crosshairs of fatal bullets on July 25, 2023, Smith and Waters became symbols of the city's strife with gun violence. In the aftermath, while Smith's journey ended then and there, Waters endured a two-day fight at Shock Trauma Hospital before succumbing. According to witness accounts and a bleak review of surveillance footage, three armed men, amongst them Payne, orchestrated this assault in a bustling parking lot, striking down youth in their eagerness to flee in a damaged silver Nissan Sentra. The vehicle, reported stolen mere minutes after the murder, helped stitch together a narrative that brought Payne to justice.
Detailing these grim events, the State’s Attorney's press release recounts the discovery of the Nissan Sentra — the suspected escape vehicle — abandoned and bearing signs of a hurried departure. The car was found the next day, with video evidence pointing to Payne and his alleged accomplice Vincent Harris, seen clearing out what might have been incriminating evidence before vanishing into the streets of Baltimore.
"A double murder in the early evening hours displays a complete disregard for the law or the community and a willingness to perpetuate violence at any cost," said State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates, in words that echoed the collective outrage and sorrow of those left behind. Harris, who will face judgment on October 7, is going through a similar situation as Payne, dealing with the results of violent actions.
