Travelers in the Baltimore area are in for new flight options as both Southwest and Frontier Airlines are expanding their routes from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Marshall), with an emphasis on connecting passengers to both domestic and international destinations.
As reported by FOX Baltimore, Southwest Airlines, which holds a dominant 70% passenger market share at BWI Marshall, announced it will be initiating weekend-only trips to the Caribbean island of St. Maarten starting April 2026. The airline is also set to begin services to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Knoxville, Tennessee, in early 2026.
Meanwhile, Frontier Airlines, not to be outdone, has confirmed it will be adding four new routes from the same hub. Frontier's expansion includes flights to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport starting November 20, alongside a route to Cancun, Mexico, commencing on November 22. A direct connection between Baltimore and New Orleans will follow on February 12, 2026.
According to a statement detailed by WBALTV, Frontier's CEO Barry Biffle highlighted the company's commitment to affordability amidst industry adjustments, declaring, "We've made major enhancements, from product upgrades to the most rewarding loyalty program, and investments in technology and service, as part of The New Frontier." The low-cost airline also introduced a new service connecting Baltimore to Chicago O'Hare International Airport earlier in May.
These latest developments showcase a growing interest and confidence in BWI Marshall as a key aviation gateway in the region. Passengers can anticipate enhanced connectivity and more choices for their travel plans, with the added convenience of more frequent flights to select destinations and the advent of new ones, like the picturesque beaches of St. Maarten and the cultural hub of New Orleans.
