Baltimore's Mount Washington neighborhood has seen a resolution, at least in part, to the unsettling string of break-ins that have left residents rattled, with the arrest of Izaak Franklin yesterday. As reported by CBS News, the 27-year-old faces burglary and theft charges related to an August 1 incident on Pimlico Road, although his involvement in the other break-ins reported from July 30 through August 12 remains under investigation, he was previously arrested by Baltimore County police and released after posting a small bond, but the subsequent arrest warrant issued by Baltimore police led to his re-arrest yesterday.
During the anxiously observed spree, five different streets in the community were hit, leaving residents like Jenny Turniansky, who has lived in Mount Washington for two years, with vandalized sanctuaries, as she said, per CBS News, "My entire house was completely trashed," and she described her home after the break-in with heaps of personal items strewn about as if by riotous children lacking guidance or inhibition.
The break-ins spurred debate over the use of facial recognition technology by law enforcement in Maryland, where a 2025 law restricts its application to serious crimes, which some say may have impeded the prompt identification and arrest of the suspect in these cases, images captured on home security footage couldn't be processed through the tech, due to said restrictions.
Meanwhile, Franklin was processed at the Central Booking Intake Facility after his capture by Baltimore police on East Preston Street, with the details of his apprehension reported by Fox Baltimore.
