The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the recovery of 23-year-old Hussein Afi Hassoun's body from Lake Erie. ClickOnDetroit reported that Hassoun went missing on Sunday afternoon after he jumped off a boat to swim and began to struggle in the water near Sterling State Park in Frenchtown Township. The search effort, initially called off due to unsafe wave conditions, resumed on Monday and Tuesday.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, four other adults were with Hassoun on a 34-foot white Baja boat. After jumping in to swim, Hassoun "began to struggle and went under the water," ClickOnDetroit noted, mentioning that the efforts to find him started on Sunday night. Officials emphasized that he was not wearing a life jacket at the time he went missing.

A boater in the area notified authorities about a body in the water on Tuesday morning, which led to the recovery of Hussoun's body by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Marine Division. 13abc detailed that witnesses had seen the man struggling in the water east of the Sandy Creek/Sterling State Park boat channel.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office, assisted by the Frenchtown Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and the Sheriff Victim Service Unit, to name a few, played crucial roles in the search and recovery operations. Following the recovery, Hassoun was transported to the Lucas County Medical Examiner, ClickOnDetroit stated. The incident is still under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau, and they are currently seeking any additional information.
