Tragedy struck at Lake Michigan near South Shore Beach in Milwaukee early Friday morning, when authorities were dispatched to the scene following a report of an individual in the water. Rescue efforts quickly escalated as multiple dive and rescue teams arrived, with the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office later confirming the recovery of a man's body. The search was initially focused on a 23-year-old man, as WISN reported.
According to a TMJ4 report, emergency personnel were documented on-site at around 6:30 a.m., with divers being deployed by 9:00 a.m. In a show of urgency, at least three watercraft were part of the initial response, occurring just as the first light of dawn began to steadily chase away the night's shadow from Milwaukee's waters.
The Milwaukee Fire Department's dive rescue team played a pivotal role in the search operation, collaborating closely with officers from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, paramedics, and the Battalion Chief. Around the time of the first reports, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel cited a witness describing someone swimming before going underwater. That search consisted of three boats in the water before 8:30 a.m., growing in number as the situation hastened and expanded along the shoreline, as noted in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
