Residents of Granada Hills and Porter Ranch can finally pour themselves a glass of tap water without fear. Following days of a boil water notice due to a malfunctioning valve, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) has declared it safe to drink the tap water once more. According to a report by CBS Los Angeles, the LADWP lifted the advisory that affected more than 9,000 customers after rigorous testing confirmed the water's safety.
The utility had previously advised residents to perform a thorough flushing of their pipes, a process they recommend to clear any potentially contaminated water from their systems. As compensation for the inconvenience, customers who were impacted by the boil water notice will be seeing a $20 credit on their bills for completing the flushing. "Impacted customers may now resume regular use of tap water but LADWP strongly recommends that customers flush their pipes," was the statement obtained by the Los Angeles Fire Department ALERT.
The water issue began last week with a valve malfunction, cutting off access during a heat advisory from the National Weather Service that saw San Fernando Valley temperatures soar 10 to 12 degrees above normal. In a push to remedy the urgent situation, construction crews worked for six days on emergency repairs, while LADWP staff distributed approximately 2.5 million bottles and over 7,000 gallons of water to the residents affected. This massive distribution effort was detailed in a release from LAFD NEWS.
With the lifting of the Boil Water Notice, LADWP has closed all bottled and recycled water distribution centers. Detailed instructions for flushing home plumbing systems are available on the LADWP website. Residents who have additional questions or concerns about water quality in their area can reach out to LADWP at (213) 367-3182 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. or contact 1-800-DIAL-DWP for 24-hour assistance. These guidelines and resources are aimed to ensure that the transition back to normal water use is seamless and safe for all community members.
