Drivers and cyclists navigating the breathtaking but challenging terrain of State Route 1 (SR-1) in Sonoma County can expect a safer journey soon. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in the Bay Area has launched a safety initiative to enhance the entire 58.3-mile stretch SR-1 with new rumble strips and bicycle pullouts, stretching from Valley Ford to the Mendocino County border. Work on the project started this week with O.C. Jones, Inc., the contractor helming the $5 million contract, which plans to be completed by late October, per the Caltrans announcement.

With an audible rumble and tangible vibration, these rumble strips are designed to quickly alert drivers when they've begun to drift out of their lane accidentally. Workers will grind away the current double center line to install the strips and then overlay it with the new strips before restriping the lane. According to Caltrans, this new feature is important for improving safety on the fog-prone route, which is known for its reduced visibility and numerous sharp curves. They aim to directly improve drivers' awareness without adding similar features on the shoulders.

Along with these precautions for motorists, Caltrans is also proactively accounting for the surge in bicycle traffic along the scenic SR-1. With the installation of 29 bicycle pullouts, this initiative acknowledges both the the route's popularity among bikepackers and the need for enhanced safety features for them. These pullouts will be strips six to eight feet wide, with variable lengths adjusted to the landscape, located adjacent to the fog line for cyclists to use, as described in the Caltrans statement.
