U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Hidalgo International Bridge recently made a significant drug seizure, intercepting a massive haul of cocaine with a street value of over $600,000. This bust underscores the ongoing battle against narcotics trafficking at our nation's borders.
The find occurred last Saturday when a Buick SUV was stopped as it attempted to enter the United States from Mexico. During a rigorous inspection process, which included the aid of nonintrusive technology and a canine unit, CBP officers uncovered 20 packages of cocaine, weighing a total of 48.45 pounds (21.98 kg), as reported on the official CBP news release. The cache of drugs was expertly hidden within the vehicle.
After the discovery of the narcotics, CBP officers seized both the drugs and the vehicle. "As this latest interception clearly illustrates, our frontline CBP officers continue to work tirelessly to keep harmful narcotics off American streets," said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez of the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry, as noted by the CBP news release.
The response to this smuggling attempt did not end with the seizure of the vehicle and the narcotics. Homeland Security Investigations special agents took the driver into custody, kicking off an expansive criminal investigation.
