A child in Jacksonville is currently recovering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after accessing an unsecured firearm. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office reported that the incident took place near Lem Turner Road and Capper Road yesterday. According to News4Jax, the child was quickly transported to the hospital and is in recovery.
The officers were called to the location following a report of an accidental shooting, and upon arrival, they discovered the injured child. As reported by Action News Jax, the investigation is ongoing to assess whether further steps need to be taken. The age and specific condition of the child have not been released by JSO.
In light of the incident, the Sheriff's Office has re-emphasized the importance of gun safety. "We can’t stress this enough: please protect your children by securing your firearms," JSO insisted in a public statement. Free gun locks are provided at all six of their substations, an effort to prevent such incidents from recurring. This reminder was echoed in statements obtained by both News4Jax and First Coast News.
As the Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation, the broader community is left to ponder the responsibilities inherent in gun ownership and the necessity of rigorous attention to safety protocols. In a post on X, JSO cited, "If you own a gun, keep it out of reach from children."
