A Clay County Sheriff's Office detention deputy, identified as Deputy Lionel Stewart, was arrested on a domestic battery charge following a physical altercation with his wife. First Coast News reported that the incident occurred at the deputy's home in Green Cove Springs on Friday, and deputies were called to respond to the domestic disturbance.

As the argument escalated, Stewart's wife, while packing her belongings, reached for a toolbox, which her husband allegedly "forcefully ripped it from her hand," according to the News4Jax report. This altercation, the sheriff's office announced, led to the victim suffering two cuts on her hand that were bleeding upon the law enforcement's arrival.

The presence of a child inside the home during the incident prompted the involvement of the Department of Children and Families. WCJB noted that the child witnessed the confrontation, escalating the seriousness of the domestic dispute.

Stewart, who had joined the sheriff's office in January 2025, was arrested without incident and taken to the Clay County Jail. Having been with the sheriff's office for a short period, the sheriff's office stated that Stewart has been placed on administrative leave "pending termination." Comments by the Clay County Sheriff's Office highlighted that "acts of domestic violence are unacceptable and will not be tolerated - especially when committed by individuals entrusted with positions of trust and leadership," as per First Coast News.

Victims of domestic violence are urged to seek help through various channels provided by the sheriff's office, including calling 911, reaching out via the non-emergency line, or using the SaferWatch app. Additionally, the Quigley House, a local support organization, offers assistance and can be contacted at (904) 284-0061.
