Extensive Search Efforts Called Off
The U.S. Coast Guard coordinated an extensive search involving helicopters, boats, and ground crews throughout Wednesday night and into Thursday morning. KTLA reported that lifeguards from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Los Angeles police officers assisted in the operation. The search was ultimately suspended Thursday morning due to safety concerns and diminishing prospects for rescue.
Authorities have not released details about potential witnesses or the circumstances surrounding Cobb-McNeil's disappearance. It remains unclear whether she was swimming in the water or who she may have been with that evening.
Venice Beach's Pattern of Disappearances
The incident highlights Venice Beach's concerning history with missing persons cases, particularly involving women. Most notably, 32-year-old Kolby Story disappeared in December 2020 after losing her car keys on Venice Beach. According to NBC Los Angeles, Story called a friend for help finding the keys and retrieved her car around 2 a.m. on December 7, 2020, but never made it home to Mar Vista.
Story's remains were discovered in July 2021 in the Ballona Wetlands after a good Samaritan found some of her personal belongings. KTLA reported that authorities searched a roughly 600-acre area of the Ballona Wetlands and Ballona Creek near Marina del Rey before making the discovery.
The area has also witnessed other tragic incidents, including former WWE star Shad Gaspard's disappearance in May 2020. As reported by ABC7 Los Angeles, Gaspard went missing after getting caught in strong rip currents while swimming with his 10-year-old son, who was rescued safely.
Missing Persons Statistics
The Las Vegas woman's disappearance occurs against a backdrop of significant missing person activity in both Nevada and California. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, an average of 10 adults are reported missing each day in Las Vegas, totaling more than 300 per month.
News3LV reported that Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse indicates there are 200 missing person cases in Nevada. Recent high-profile Las Vegas cases include the brief 2025 search for reality TV personality Natalie "Nat D" DiDonato, who NBC News reported turned up safely in Nevada, and the ongoing mystery of insurance agent Irma Mkrtchyan, who vanished 11 years ago.
Venice Beach serves as both a popular tourist destination and home to a complex urban landscape, with hundreds of people living in tents and RVs in the area. The combination of heavy foot traffic and diverse population makes investigations particularly challenging for law enforcement.
Anyone with information about Ashanta Ayana Elise Cobb-McNeil's disappearance is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles Police Department or the U.S. Coast Guard.
