The Columbus Fire 123rd Fire Recruit Class participated in a longstanding tradition ahead of their commencement ceremony at the Fire Training Academy, as documented in a social media post from the Columbus Division of Fire. The recruits raised their class banner, emblazoned with the slogan "Class 123-Nothing’s Free," which will join the lineage of class banners adorning the gym rafters at the academy.
The honor of hanging the banner fell to a select group of firefighters, chosen by their peers. Sharing this honor, and illustrating commitment to their cohort and the service ahead, were Firefighters Thomas Algier, Michael Hackney, Jeffrey Iles, Aaron Keyt, Nicholas Lehtomaa, and Quinton Wheeler. Alongside the communal pride in their shared accomplishment, individual accolades were also awarded preceding the commencement. Noted for his exceptional abilities as an instructor, Firefighter Anthony Klein, who has been with Columbus Fire since February 2006, was recognized as the best instructor.
During the ceremony, the division also acknowledged the recruits who excelled in specific areas of their training. Showing prowess in the arena of physical readiness, Fire recruit Connor Staheli took home the honor for top physical testing scores within the class. His classmate, Nicholas Lehtomaa, stood out for achieving the highest academic scores over the rigorous 32 weeks at the academy. In recognition of this achievement, the accolade for Lehtomaa came not only in the form of the best academic achievement but also a nomination for the distinguished Brandin O’Keefe “Not An Ordinary Man” Award, according to the Columbus Division of Fire.
