
Tragedy struck Fairfield County on August 9 when a motorcycle and a pickup truck collided, resulting in a fatality. The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene at approximately 2:10 p.m. on State Route 674 near County Road 41 in Madison Township. The incident involved a 73-year-old Columbus man, Johnny Hackney, who was northbound on his 2014 Harley Davidson motorcycle when he was struck by a 2015 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, according to The Columbus Dispatch.
Robert Nichols, 44, of Lithopolis, was identified as the pickup truck's driver who allegedly failed to safely turn east into a driveway, causing the collision. The motorcyclist, Hackney, was rushed to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition. Despite efforts to save his life, Hackney succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. It was reported by ABC6 that Nichols did not report any injuries at the time of the crash.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash. As of yesterday, no charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing. The aftermath of such an event inevitably raises questions about road safety and the responsibilities of each individual who operates a vehicle upon these shared byways.
