Residents of Southeast Michigan wrangling with overdue utility bills during these hot summer months are set to receive some much-needed relief. Consumers Energy has committed $2 million in aid for qualified customers struggling to pay their summer energy bills. According to a CBS News Detroit report, the utility provider is partnering with The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW) and The Salvation Army to manage and disperse financial support to those in distress.

The eligibility for this aid is contingent on both household income and size, and it is designed for customers who find themselves either past due, facing service shutoffs, or with lingering bills from former addresses. An individual earning under $62,060 or a family of four with a household income below $128,600 annually could be eligible for this one-time payment assistance. As stated by ABC12, applications for support can be initiated through an online application or over the phone.

Indeed, this initiative is not the first of its kind; Consumers Energy had previously earmarked a generous $5 million during the winter months to help its customers cope with heating bills. "Consumers Energy is proud to again take the lead in assisting our customers in their greatest time of need – ensuring more Michigan households who need help this summer can access these funds," said Lauren Snyder, Consumers Energy’s senior vice president and chief customer and growth officer, in a statement quoted by WILX.

For those wishing to apply for aid, they must undergo a verification process conducted by the aforementioned agencies, presumably to ensure the funds reach those truly in need. The individual and family income thresholds stated are indicators of the relief program's broad intent to address a variety of households experiencing financial strain. Customers needing guidance can reach out directly to THAW at 1-800-866-8429 or visit their website, while The Salvation Army also welcomes inquiries about the program through local branches or online, as per ABC12’s report.
