A Dearborn man is fighting for his life in critical condition after an alleged intentional hit-and-run incident. As reported by FOX 2 Detroit, the man, Haidar Alfadawi, was struck by an SUV in what the police suggest was a deliberate act on Michigan Avenue and Howe Street last Saturday night. The event followed an online social media dispute which turned violently real, with authorities now piecing together the preceding threats and the consequent roadside assault.
Alfadawi, well recognized for his distinctively adorned SUV, had previously approached the Dearborn Police Department to report an alleged assault aimed at him dated August 21, which now adds a layer of premeditation to the tragic event. He was found unresponsive on the sidewalk and immediately received life-saving measures from first responders. According to CBS Detroit, after the incident, witnesses observed the SUV flee the scene, with the suspect later calling the police to admit his location and wait to be apprehended.
In what appears to be a transparent follow-through, the Dearborn Police Department arrested a 38-year-old man who claimed responsibility for the incident. "Public safety is our highest priority and we take every concern seriously," stated Police Chief Issa Shahin, emphasizing the department's commitment to transparency and accountability in addressing community concerns, as noted by ClickOnDetroit. The suspect now awaits formal charges from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office while held without bond.
Mayor Abdullah Hammoud also weighed in on the incident, declaring that treatment with dignity, respect, and empathy from the police department is a necessity, not an option. As tensions mount within the city following the prelude to violence and the aftermath of the hit-and-run, Dearborn police are reviewing the prior interactions between Alfadawi and the department. "We understand the community has questions and are committed to ensuring trust through transparency and accountability," Police Chief Shahin told CBS Detroit, as the investigation continues into this harrowing event linking online threats to real-world peril.
