A 23-year-old Dearborn man, Hussein Afi Hassoun, has been presumed drowned after he failed to resurface from a swim in Lake Erie yesterday. ClickOnDetroit reports that Hassoun began to struggle while swimming and went underwater without a life jacket.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office indicated that the emergency call was made around 5:49 p.m., stating that the man was missing after jumping off a 34-foot white Baja boat to swim with four others. However, according to Monroe News, the search for Hassoun was suspended later that evening around 11 p.m. due to unsafe wave conditions. They reported that the search resumed this morning.

Rescue teams, including the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and the Southeast Michigan Dive Group, utilized side-scan sonar technology in their efforts to find the missing man. As per a report by WTOL, the Frenchtown Township Fire Department's rescue boat was responsible for locating Hassoun's companions and escorting them safely back to shore after the incident. Multiple agencies were involved in the search, including the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Border Patrol.

Authorities have not released information regarding the finding of Hassoun as of yet. Still, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office encourages the public to call 734-243-7070 with any information that could assist in their search efforts. The involvement of various teams highlights the extensive nature of the search, as reported by Monroe News, with groups from Oakland County, Wayne County, Downriver Mutual Aid, and Van Buren Township also providing support.
