Commuters relying on the Benicia Bridge must adjust their plans due to scheduled maintenance work. Caltrans has temporarily suspended the ongoing steel weld inspection and plate repairs on the bridge, which carries Interstate 680 traffic. The pause, expected to last up to four weeks, comes after supply delays that have disrupted the project's progress, per Caltrans' report update.
Meanwhile, work continues unabated at the Carquinez Bridge, which spans Interstate 80. The maintenance team is busy with essential lane and ramp closures to ensure the bridge's structural integrity remains uncompromised. These closures, including full and partial lane restrictions, are slated for the daytime hours, stretching from the early morning 3 AM start on weekdays to a 1 AM kickoff on Fridays, reported the Caltrans release.
Drivers using the Carquinez Bridge during the specified times until September should brace for minor delays and are encouraged to plan accordingly. For those relying on the Eastbound I-80, the Pomona St/San Pablo Ave onramp will be closed. Eastbound traffic also loses access to lanes 3 and 4 from Refinery Rd to the Carquinez Toll Plaza. These closures and works are critical to the infrastructure's longevity and safety, as Caltrans emphasized. All planning remains subject to the whims of weather and other unforeseeable changes.
With the Benicia closures projected to carry on through December 2025, local drivers may need to factor in extra travel time for a while longer. Caltrans advises the public to remain work zone alert and proceed cautiously when navigating the construction areas.
