A harrowing incident unfolded in Detroit yesterday when a white Ford Escape, with a child inside, was stolen. The theft occurred around 1:20 p.m. in the 18600 block of Freeland Street and as reported by CBS News Detroit, the vehicle was left running by the parent who momentarily stepped away.
According to WXYZ, the suspect abandoned the child near the scene of the theft before continuing on with the stolen vehicle. Detroit Police have continued their search for the unidentified suspect. No suspect details had been released as of yesterday evening. A report from FOX 2 Detroit noted that the vehicle's license plate appears to be from Kentucky.
The child was fortunately found unharmed a block away and was attended to by Detroit EMS. Meanwhile, the Detroit Police Department emphasized the risks of leaving children unattended in vehicles, with Deputy Chief Jacqueline Pritchett saying, "Situations like this can be avoided. The Detroit Police Department strongly suggests that adults do not leave any children inside of an unattended vehicle," in a statement obtained by CBS News Detroit.
