The Detroit Lions have decided to cut ties with quarterback Hendon Hooker, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. Hooker, who was a third-round pick in the 2023 draft, has struggled to make an impact, managing to complete just 22 of his 40 passes for 187 yards, with no touchdowns and three interceptions during this year's preseason games. "The Lions are releasing QB Hendon Hooker, sources say," Garafolo reported, suggesting that head coach Dan Campbell believes Hooker might benefit from a new environment, according to Sporting News.
Hendon's release from the Lions doesn't exactly come as a shock. Despite entering the training camp as a hopeful for the backup quarterback position, according to a report by PrideofDetroit, his performance fell short of expectations. He led the team to only one scoring drive, which resulted in a mere field goal, and he lost two fumbles over the course of four preseason games. After the Lions' recent showing, Coach Campbell had hinted at the possibility of changes, questioning "how much development do you believe there still is" and whether depth needs in other positions might outweigh the potential for growth with Hooker as a backup.
Meanwhile, Kyle Allen has been confirmed as the backup to starting quarterback Jared Goff after a strong preseason showing. Allen threw for 401 yards and scored five touchdowns against two interceptions, as per WXYZ. The Detroit team now faces the task of determining who will assume the third-string quarterback role, whether from their current roster or through the upcoming waivers.
As Hooker prepares for waivers on Wednesday, there remains a chance that another team in the league might see value in his abilities. If not, the free agency awaits, and the possibility of Hooker rejoining the Lions' practice squad could still be in the cards, as detailed in a report by Sporting News. Yet, given the circumstances, it's likely that Hooker will seek a fresh start elsewhere, concluding his tenure with the Lions.
