A 31-year-old Detroit man has been charged in connection with a fatal stabbing that took place at an eastside pool party earlier this month. Daiwan Lemane Hopson is facing serious charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of assault with intent to murder, as announced by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. As reported by The Detroit News, the violent incident resulted in the deaths of Martisha Payne, 25, and Jakirea Williams, 31. Two males, a 31-year-old from Pontiac and a 40-year-old from Detroit, were also wounded in the attack.
According to ClickOnDetroit, Hopson is alleged to have initially stabbed one man repeatedly during a dispute in the backyard of the residence situated near Seven Mile Road and Fleming Street. He then purportedly proceeded to violently attack three more individuals in the front yard. If convicted, Hopson might potentially spend the rest of his life behind bars.
The Detroit Police, called to the scene around 10 p.m. on August 9, found the victims suffering from stab wounds. Both injured men were taken to the hospital, while the two women, Payne and Williams, succumbed to their injuries. Audacy reports that the gathering, intended as a celebration amongst friends and family, quickly spiraled into a tableau of violence and loss, with Hopson allegedly at the center of it.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy described the events sorrowfully: "What started out as a friendly family and friends end of the summer gathering turned deadly with four people stabbed. Two succumbed to their injuries. A disagreement. A quick escalation. An introduction of a deadly weapon. And then multiple deaths. So senseless. So tragic. And so very violent," as told to Audacy. Further complicating the narrative is the revelation that Hopson, now awaiting arraignment, has a criminal history, having been incarcerated previously for assault with intent to do great bodily harm, and was out on parole during the time of the stabbing, according to Michigan Department of Corrections records obtained by Audacy.
