The Detroit Red Wings are set to raise Sergei Fedorov’s No. 91 to the rafters, joining the ranks of the franchise's most esteemed players. In a ceremony slated for January 12, 2026, Fedorov will become the ninth player to receive this honor from the storied hockey team. The event will be held at the Little Caesars Arena, against a fitting backdrop – a game against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Chris Ilitch, Detroit Red Wings Governor and Chief Executive Officer, expressed his pride in celebrating Fedorov’s achievements. "We are honored to celebrate Sergei Fedorov and raise his #91 to its rightful place hanging in the rafters at Little Caesars Arena, among the all-time greats who have worn the Winged Wheel," Ilitch said, according to a CBS News Detroit report.
Fedorov's remarkable NHL record includes over 1,200 games, 483 goals, and a tally of over a thousand points. Born in Russia, Fedorov was instrumental in expanding the appeal of the NHL globally. His contribution to the sport, and specifically to the Red Wings during his tenure from 1990 to 2003, was described by FOX 2 Detroit as monumental, saying, "he played with the Wings from 1990 to 2003; he managed to score 30 goals or more on 10 separate occasions."
A sense of gratitude was palpable in Fedorov’s response to the honor. "I’m extremely grateful for this tremendous honor," Fedorov told the Detroit Free Press. "Thank you to everyone with the Red Wings organization, especially those who helped bring me to Detroit and gave me the chance to play for such a historic franchise." The retiring of his jersey coincides with the Red Wings' centennial celebration, making it a historic event for both the player and the team.
