Detroit radio station 88.7 CIMX, known as 89X, is preparing for its return to alternative rock today. The Windsor-based Bell Media station, which switched to the “Pure Country 89” format in 2020, will rebrand as New Rock 89X. A Facebook post hinted at the change, with former 89X DJ Greg Gnyp confirming the comeback FOX 2 Detroit reported.

The Detroit News noted that the station’s return follows weeks of speculation, including Spanish-language promos referencing a musical “revolution.” The station was widely recognized during the 1990s and 2000s for its alternative rock programming.

WXYZ reported that Amherstburg native Brad Gibb, whose career began with an internship at “The Morning X” in 1998, is leading the relaunch. General Manager Jennifer McLellan said the plan includes locally programmed shows in the morning, workday, and drive time slots to reconnect with the community.
