Durham and Roxboro residents have the chance to contribute to the future of their surroundings by weighing in on the potential development of a new 26-mile trail, and in true democratic spirit, the local government is calling on the folks who know their neighborhoods best. According to an announcement released by the City of Durham, public engagement is crucial to turning the dormant 18-mile rail corridor into an active multi-use pathway that will link parks, neighborhoods, and academic institutions while paying homage to the area's diverse cultural, environmental, and historical facets.
The green endeavor is a collaboration between various bodies including Durham County, the City of Durham, Triangle West Transportation Planning Organization, the North Carolina Department of Transportation, and the East Coast Greenway Alliance, they are aiming to transform the landscape into an artery of activity and connection these organizations together are spearheading this initiative that has the potential to augment the local transportation network and stitch together the community fabric. "This trail has the potential to bring people together, celebrate our history, and become a key piece of our active transportation network,” Durham City Council Member Carl Rist told the City of Durham's official website.
The public is encouraged to share their input through a series of informal workshops that promise a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere where insights can be freely exchanged, with these events scheduled throughout August, participants will have the opportunity to pore over draft designs, pinpoint vital community links, and offer up personal reflections on what the trail should encapsulate directly on a large-scale map of the project area. Celebrating a spirit of inclusivity, these gatherings also cater to the little ones with a dedicated kids' table to ensure everyone's voice gets a chance to be heard.
An online survey will be open from August 18 to September 22 for residents to share input on the trail’s design, including alignment options, safe road crossings, and desired amenities. Details on how to access the survey are available on the City of Durham’s website.
