Big news for Durham County as they snag a hefty $500,000 grant from the Great Trails State Program, which will be a financial booster for the developing Durham-to-Roxboro Rail Trail project. Governor Josh Stein stepped up last Thursday to make the announcement. The grant, handpicked from nearly $11 million distributed across various trail efforts, is aimed to connect Durham with Roxboro, offering a path not just for travel but a slice for recreational life.
Riding high on a $25 million statewide investment5 made by the North Carolina General Assembly in 2023, the grant aims to convert a 26-mile stretch of old rail into a friendly trail for both bikes and pedestrians. Caught between the thrill of expansion and the practicality of development, Durham County will throw this funding into the acquisition pot for the rail corridor.
The grant is merely a part of the financial puzzle, with other revenues expected to fill in the gaps. Following the money is a trail planning study for the 18-mile segment within Durham County, laying the groundwork for the bricks-and-mortar phase of building the trail itself. "We are incredibly grateful to the General Assembly for creating this funding opportunity and elated that Durham County will benefit from the additional grant funding," Ellen Beckmann, Durham County Transportation Director, told Durham County.
The Great Trails State Program shows North Carolina’s dedication to improving its trail systems by giving matching grants to local governments and nonprofits. These trails do more than connect places—they bring communities together, linking people to nature, culture, and commerce. They turn old paths into new shared spaces, offering fresh opportunities for everyone.
