Swimmers looking to cool off at Independence Lake Beach this summer might have to put their plans on hold. Due to elevated E. coli levels, the Washtenaw County Health Department has issued a swimming ban at the popular beach located in Whitmore Lake, as reported by The Detroit News. While swimming is off-limits, other recreational activities that keep visitors out of the water, such as fishing, have the green light to continue.
The discovery of these bacteria levels came through the county's routine water quality monitoring, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. According to a ClickOnDetroit report, environmental factors such as stormwater runoff after heavy rains or strong winds can displace the bacteria usually settled underwater and contribute to these spikes in E. coli levels.
The public is advised that the closure will remain in place at Independence Lake beach until further notice, with follow-up testing determining when it is safe to reopen for swimming. As per officials, E. coli, which is a bacteria commonly found in the intestines of animals and humans, can lead to health issues if harmful strains are present in significant amounts in public waters. The health department utilizes set bacterial limits to ensure that public safety is not compromised when engaging in recreational swimming activities.
A social media post from the Washtenaw County Health Department has also confirmed the closure, stating, "Independence Lake beach (3200 Jennings Rd, Whitmore Lake) is currently closed for swimming due to high levels of E. coli bacteria." The department will continue to provide updates on the beach status, inviting concerned residents or visitors to stay informed through their website and social media platforms.
