A tragic incident in Rocky Mount resulted in the death of a moped driver on Friday night. WRAL reports that the collision occurred around 8:20 p.m. at the juncture of Cooley Road and South Church Street.
According to a news release from the Rocky Mount Police Department, obtained by CBS 17, officers who responded to the scene discovered that a vehicle had collided with the moped. The impact of the crash was severe enough to cause death at the scene for the moped's operator, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, pending family notification.
The area near the crash site, notably just west of the railyard, was under investigation as the department’s Traffic Enforcement and Crash Reconstruction Unit (TECRU) sought to understand the circumstances of the fatal encounter. Officials say more information about the wreck will be shared in due course.
The identity of the man who perished in the accident is being kept confidential for the time-being, a common practice during the preliminary stages of such investigations. As reported by WITN, this measure is to ensure that relatives are informed before the public release of names.
