The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released Special Agent in Charge Spencer Evans from duty, detailed in a statement from his lawyer, sparking debate over the termination's legitimacy. The announcement was first reported by Fox5 Vegas and confirmed by a subsequent statement from Evans’ attorney, Mark Zaid.
Zaid condemned the FBI's actions, saying, "Today the FBI and Department of Justice further betrayed law enforcement and all ethical ideals that govern our civil service system." He accused the federal agency of firing his client "under a false pretense of constitutional authority" and skipping over "all routine internal due process protections for a member of the Senior Executive." These accusations were made in a statement obtained by 8 News Now.
Spencer Evans, who had been recently reassigned from Las Vegas to a leadership position in Alabama, had served with the FBI for 21 years. 8 News Now reported Evans' departure from the Las Vegas office in July and his subsequent reassignment. However, the controversy appears to stem from Evans' earlier role in human resources and his oversight of COVID-19 vaccine exemptions. These factors were confirmed by sources and Zaid in his statement.
Zaid vowed to "pursue every available legal remedy" in defense of Evans, criticizing the FBI's reliance on past COVID protocols implementation. "The purge of dedicated, patriotic FBI officials like Special Agent Evans is an absolute disgraceful moment in history,” he said, indicating that the protocols in question were in keeping with DOJ instructions. This statement was reported by 8 News Now. Another layer to this narrative emerged from reports by The New York Times and Reuters, noting this latest firing as part of broader dismissals, which some speculate to be retaliatory actions tracing back to the Trump administration.
The FBI has not yet publicly stated their grounds for the termination of Evans. Meanwhile, the legal battle as promised by his attorney seems to be gearing up to further elucidate the reasons behind the controversial firing of the veteran FBI official.
