Residents of Fernandina Beach can breathe a bit easier after the conclusion of a year-long crime spree. Wilburt Brandon Yawn was convicted last Tuesday, for a series of burglaries that plagued the First Avenue community. According to a social media post from the Fernandina Beach Police Department, Yawn burglarized several vehicles and residences, lifting valuables that included a firearm, which he used to commit additional crimes. Yawn's crime trajectory culminated with multiple felony charges, reflecting a community harassed by his actions.
The Fernandina Beach Police Department informed the public that Yawn's wave of property crimes started on July 28, 2024. The burglaries, described as "armed," since Yawn had stolen a firearm, were swiftly connected to him by the relentless efforts of the Criminal Investigations Division. Despite the intensity of these crimes, it was nearly an year later that the rigorous investigative process concluded with Yawn's conviction. He now faces an 8-year sentence, a sobering term that serves as both punishment and deterrent.
Yawn was found guilty of 2 counts of armed burglary, 1 count of burglary to a structure or conveyance, and 1 count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. These convictions highlight the danger he posed to his community, particularly in the light of him already being prohibited from firearm possession. The effective resolution of these cases demonstrates an active and effective law enforcement presence, prioritizing the safety and security of Fernandina Beach residents.
Once the arrest warrants were obtained, preferably a month after the crimes were connected to Yawn, the detectives' determination led to his conviction. Commending the detectives, the police department declared, "Great job to our hard-working Detectives on solving this case and obtaining justice for the victims."
