In a significant shake-up in the Sonoma County wine scene, a series of acquisitions by former Google executive David Drummond has consolidated some of the area's most innovative wineries under one roof. Joining Drummond's burgeoning wine empire are Reeve Wines and Martha Stoumen Wines, which were recently snatched up by the Overshine Collective, a group that also includes Idlewild, BloodRoot, Remy Saves the Sea, and The Ramble. This news comes hot on the heels of Drummond's earlier purchases in the wine sector, which have cemented his position as a growing force in the industry.
Drummond, who founded Overshine in 2024, adds to his portfolio two wineries that have been particularly adept at capturing the admiration of younger wine enthusiasts. According to reports from the SF Chronicle, the winemakers at the core of these brands, Sam Bilbro of Idlewild, Martha Stoumen, and the team at Reeve Wines, will maintain equity within the Overshine Collective. The consolidation appears to be Drummond's strategic response to rapidly changing market conditions that have left numerous other Bay Area wineries to sell or shut down.
The wine industry is undergoing a crisis, with closures and sales signaling tough times for vintners. Last week, Napa Valley's William Harrison Vineyards & Winery announced a sale, and Vineyard 29 was put on the market for a whopping $65 million. To add to the ill portents, one of San Francisco's last wineries declared it was closing its doors for good. The Press Democrat highlighted that these wineries joining the Overshine Collective preserve not only their brands but also their craft as they gain better security and economies of scale within the wine industry.
On Instagram, Reeve Wines and Martha Stoumen shared their excitement about the recent developments. Reeve Wines reassured followers, stating, “Nothing much should change for you as we continue to do what we do best.” Martha Stoumen, meanwhile, conveyed her enthusiasm for the new chapter, stating, "We're making big changes for small California wineries and we can't wait for you to join us on the journey," in a post on Martha Stoumen.
