The Garland Police Department has recently concluded Operation Slowdown, an initiative aimed at curtailing the rampant speeding issue on local roads. The operation, which spanned from July 18 through August 3, was a targeted enforcement period where the police pulled over and issued a substantial number of speeding citations.
According to a social media post from the Garland Police Department, during this two-week crackdown, a total of 977 speeding tickets were handed out to hurried motorists, with 128 of these citations being funded by a grant. Routine patrols accounted for 722 of the infractions, whereas 194 traffic stops took place during the grant-funded portion of the operation. Offenders were not limited to speed demons alone, as 127 other types of traffic offenses were also recorded. Despite the surge in ticketing, the department managed to issue 48 warnings, including 24 for speeding.
The police force was particularly vigilant in areas with heavy traffic volumes and locales notorious for speeding incidents. This operation was part of a broader partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), which has been actively addressing the speeding menace on Texas roads. Speeding has been a significant contributor to the state's traffic fatalities, with TxDOT data suggesting that it was a factor in almost a quarter of all fatal crashes in the state in 2023. More than 1,200 lives were forfeited in these tragic incidents.
