General Motors will temporarily lay off 360 workers at its Factory Zero Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center from September 2 to October 6 due to lower demand for electric vehicles. The layoffs will affect production of the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ. GM said, “Factory ZERO is making temporary adjustments to production to align to market dynamics,” and noted that workers may receive subpay and benefits under the GM-UAW contract. In April, about 200 jobs were also cut at the plant, according to CBS News.
The U.S. electric vehicle market is experiencing slower sales, influenced by the expiration of federal tax incentives and changes to emissions regulations under the Trump administration. GM’s smaller EVs, including the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Blazer EV, are selling better than larger models, as “Despite being supremely comfortable and extremely powerful, all of the big EVs are slowly losing ground as more affordable options are gaining traction.” Other automakers are seeing similar trends, with electric pickups such as Ford’s F-150 Lightning and Tesla’s Cybertruck falling below projections. “Collectively, all automakers sold about 35,000 electric pickups in the United States in the first half of 2025,” compared with 1.6 million gas-powered pickups sold during the same period, as reported by Insideevs.
GM says it will continue its electrification plans despite recent challenges. CEO Mary Barra has kept production of the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV pickups running at the Factory Zero plant. GM spokesperson Kevin Kelly told The Detroit News that those production lines will not be affected by the recent layoffs.
