In a move that could buoy the workforce in South Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has announced the awarding of over $1.6 million in grants aimed at fueling career training programs in the region. On August 8th, the Governor's office disclosed that seven schools will benefit from the Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants, doling out equipment crucial for technical education in high-demand occupations. These grants, as noted in a statement from the Governor's office, are expected to initially train 482 students in fields such as nursing, electric trade, and automotive services.

Highlighting the impact of these grants, Governor Abbott acknowledged in a press release the importance of supporting "career and technical training programs to ensure young Texans have the tools necessary to be competitive." The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), which is handling the JET grants, partners with local entities to offer training in fields that show promise for growth and sustainable employment. One such grant for $350,000 was given to Banquete Independent School District (ISD), starting the careers of 35 aspiring nurses in partnership with Del Mar College.

TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that these grants serve as a boon to both young job seekers and the broader economic landscape of Texas. According to a press release, Daniel said, “Today’s JET grants will help more than 480 young Texans build the confidence, skillset, and experience for critically in-demand careers." The promise of these investments is not limited to providing students with the necessary skills but also extends to making Texas businesses more competitive by cultivating a dynamic workforce, he added.

The grants were presented by TWC Commissioner Joe Esparza, who attended a ceremony at Del Mar College’s Oso Creek campus alongside local officials and school representatives. Other notable grants include $313,833 awarded to Del Mar College itself, grooming students to become automotive service technicians, and a $227,050 grant to Victoria College, which aims to train chemical plant and systems operators, in the job and the paycheck opportunities provided in Texas, praised Governor Abbott.

The JET grants are partly a legislative effort, with funds allocated during each biennium to aid in the start-up costs of expanding career and technical education programs within public community colleges, state colleges, technical schools, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools in Texas. This financial support is imperative as the equipment purchased through these grants has the singular focus of training students for jobs in high-demand occupations, directly influencing the workforce readiness of young Texans.
