Ohio Governor Mike DeWine marked a new chapter for the state's infrastructure by inaugurating three new rest areas in Belmont and Washington Counties, offering travelers a blend of convenience, safety, and local culture. The governor was on the ground for ribbon-cutting ceremonies at the Belmont County I-70 westbound and the Washington County I-77 northbound facilities, per an announcement by his office.

"Our Welcome Centers such as Belmont County’s I-70 westbound and Washington County’s I-77 northbound are a first impression chance to tell Ohio’s great story," Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed in a statement reported by his office's release. The new amenities reflect a state that values its past and present, highlighted by attractions such as the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum and the presence of an original Ernest “Mooney” Warther hand-carved train on display.

Apart from the historical showcases, these rest areas have something for everyone, especially for those needing a stretch, a moment with their pets, or a delight for the kids with Storybook Trails. Such features are designed to encourage visitors to engage with the surroundings beyond the highway, perhaps even enticing them to delve deeper into what Ohio has to offer.

Importantly, ODOT Director Pam Boratyn pointed out the broader implications of these upgraded rest stops. "Modernizing our highway rest areas is about more than just convenience, it’s about safety, economic growth, and showcasing the best of our state," she said, as per the Ohio Governor's Office.

The commitment is significant—36 new rest areas and updates to over 40 others by the end of 2026. It's a comprehensive effort to boost local tourism and commerce. Ohio's visitor spending reached a formidable $57 billion in 2024, a testament to the allure and hospitality that these rest areas seem poised to further enhance for the 242 million visitors Ohio welcomed that year.
